Account People. I’m not going to say that account people have the hardest job in the agency, but I will say that there is no harder job in the agency that being an account person.
You are responsible for all the work you do — and there is a lot of it — plus all the work everyone else does. You are accountable to your teammembers, to the agency and to the client too.
When you’re great, you can make the difference between absolute brand, business, creative and relationship victory. When you’re not, it all can come crashing down.
We all need to help our account people help us be great. Know that deadlines looming and uncertainty are a stressful cocktail. Share information. Have empathy for what your teammates are up against.
Love and respect your account person, like a smart actor or sports star loves her agent or manager. These people bleed for us and our work and they can make the difference between stardom and starving.

FreshDirect.com, the Internet-only grocer that has built a devoted flock of click-and-buy shoppers in the high-rises of New York and across its suburbs, rolled delivery trucks into Philadelphia on Monday to launch its first expansion beyond the Big Apple.
Although initially delivering only to households in and around Center City, the company that hawks farm-to-doorstep produce, meticulously selected seafood, and prepared dinners, along with supermarket staples, hopes to expand deeper next year into the Philadelphia region, building upon this area’s reputation as a food lovers’ haven.
“We are extremely excited to be in Philadelphia today,” FreshDirect cofounder and chief executive Jason Ackerman said during a news conference in City Hall, surrounded by wooden baskets and crates brimming with red apples, bell peppers in four colors, petite eggplants, tomatoes, and autumnal gourds.

Unlike most agencies, we do not bill by the hour.
I think you all know that I love to work and that I put in a lot of hours. But my focus is on results. The focus is on the results produced. For example, if you’re an account person, are you getting the best results and the best relationship for getting those results for your clients? But, that’s not all. Are you also getting those results in a way that uses our resources in the best possible way? Are you inspiring, clear, respectful, honest and efficient. Do people get better working on your stuff, so that they produce even better results on this project and the next? Value isn’t just about what is produced, but also about at what cost? If we can enrich each other while we focus on producing results, we will continue to get better and better, individually and together. Our value will be like an unstoppable force.
For more on efficiency vs. hours, read the NY Times article “They Work Long Hours, but What About Results?” here.
